These 15 family New Year goals are things I want to collectively work on in our home this year with my husband and kids. A lot of things we already do, but there are some new small things I want to add in as well. Hopefully these will give you good ideas as you reflect on things you want to do in your home for 2025.
Family New Year Goals:
When planning goals as a family I think it's important to consider a few key things. Am I going to be greatly disrupting a family routine by adding in this goal? Is the buy in going to be so great the no one wants to do it? What is the financial repercussions of this goal? Keeping all those things in mind helps me to decide what is worth and not worth trying to add in over the next year and keep things realistic for ourselves.
With that being said, here are the 15 family new year goals I hope to focus on in 2025.
Have Family Game Night Once a Week:
We are pretty good about playing games together as a family, but there isn't a lot of intention behind it. I think I want to make a point to make Monday evenings after dinner a night that we specifically sit down and play games together. The older my kids get the more I crave getting as much time with them as possible and so a lot of our goals look like things we can do to bring us closer.
Eat Dinner at the Table Every Night:
We actually are really good about doing this, but we get sloppy on Saturdays and when the weeks get busy with after school activities its easy to deprioritize it as well. This year I want to make a focus to eat together even if it's after our normal 5pm time and be okay with eating later even if it means eating at 7pm after activities are over.
Monthly Family Date Night:
This is something that we started doing a year or so ago but then life got busy and we stopped doing it regularly. It's something that I want to plan better for 2025 and plan a specific date for all 12 months of the year so that we know what we're doing ahead of time and all we have to do is execute.
Get outside as a Family Once a Week:
Whether that's skiing, going for a walk, or a bike ride, I want to prioritize getting outside more, especially in the winter when it's easy to just stay inside.
Teach Kids Basic Cooking Skills:
Kyle and Kinsley are 12 and 10 and this is something that I definitely feel they're both lacking in. This year I want to include them more in making dinners and helping in the kitchen to equip them with more basic skills.
Read One Book Together Each Month:
We love reading in our house but don't read together at all anymore now that the kids are older. I want to pick 12 tween novels to read this year and make them family read-alouds for 2025.
Teach the Kids more About Finances:
This year the kids got checking and high yield savings accounts through crew, along with their own debit cards. I've been paying them for when they let me film them for sponsored reels on IG to give them access to more money so they can learn about managing it, and this year I want to continue those conversations, teach them more financial skills, and saving for long term goals.
You can get 4.45% APY when you sign up for crew and use my invite code: 4VTWTG
Set and Stick to a Weekly Cleaning Schedule:
Right now I do a majority of the cleaning and I want to get better about delegating to the kids on weekends and giving them specific zones that are theirs to clean and care for each Saturday.
Go to Hawaii!!
Derek and I are in the process of acquiring enough credit card miles to take the kids to Hawaii for free. Our plan is to get enough miles to fly for free through Alaskan Airlines, and then get hotel points through Hilton to cover lodging. We don't have dates planned yet but will book once we get all our bonus miles in place.
Have a "Yes Day" with Each Kid:
Last year I did a "yes day" with Kinsley at the mall and she absolutely loved it. I haven't done one with Kyle and I think it would be fun to give him one as well.
Do a Family Devotional Each Day:
Our goal is to do this each day but we haven't been as consistent as we'd like. We're in a really good rhythm with doing it at dinner right now and so I'm hoping to get a new devotional for the new year now that our advent one is done and then doing that throughout the new year.
Have An Outdoor Activity for Each Season:
In the winter we have skiiing, the spring we have kayaking, the summer we swim at the pool frequently, and then in the fall we hibernate until winter comes. This year I'm determined to find something for us to do in the fall (possibly hiking with a Huckleberry Hiking Cart for Kinsley).
Have A Monthly Family Movie Night:
Whether at the movie theater or at our house, I want to watch more movies with the kids because it isn't something we do that often, but always enjoy it when we do!
Get Family Pictures Taken:
We used to be so good about getting pictures taken each fall and it's something we have fallen out of the habit with the last couple years. I want to get pictures done in the spring and summer to have some fresh portraits of everyone done.
Get the Kids on a Multivitamin Routine:
I have been taking Gruns for the last 18 months, and last year they came out with a kid's vitamin. I want to start getting those for Kyle and Kinsley to help fill in their nutritional gaps that I'm positive they have from being picky eaters.
What goals are you working on as a family in the New Year? I'd love to know in the comments below!
