Chapter Books for Family Reading:
I set a goal for 2025 to read more chapter books with the kids this year. This is something we did a lot when they were younger, but we've definitely fallen out of the practice the last several years. This year I have chose 12 books for us to read as a family, one for each month, and I'm excited to make this a new part of our family routine.
The 2025 Chapter Books for Family Reading:
January:
February:
Wonder by R.J. PalacioIn February, we’ll dive into Wonder, and I’m looking forward to introducing my family to Auggie Pullman and his inspiring story. I know this book will give us the chance to talk about kindness, acceptance, and what it means to be a good friend. It’ll be such a meaningful read as we see the world through Auggie’s eyes and explore how small acts of compassion can make a huge difference.
This March, we’ll read Pax, and I’m ready to be swept away by this heartfelt story of a boy and his fox. I know my kids will connect with Peter and Pax’s bond, and it’ll be so interesting to see their reactions to the challenges they face apart. I expect this book to spark deep conversations about loyalty, growing up, and what it means to do the right thing, even when it’s tough.
April:
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson BurnettFor May, we’ll dive into Echo, and I’m excited to see how my family connects with its unique blend of storytelling and music. The intertwining lives of the characters, bound together by a magical harmonica, will give us plenty to discuss about resilience, hope, and the ways we’re all connected. I know this book will leave a lasting impression and make us think about the power of perseverance.
June:
The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne BirdsallWhen summer begins in June, we’ll read The Penderwicks and join this lively family on their adventures. I can’t wait for the lighthearted fun and the laughter I know this book will bring as we follow four sisters through a summer filled with surprises and friendship. It feels like the perfect way to kick off the season and celebrate family togetherness.
In August, we’ll dig into Holes and uncover the layers of this quirky, captivating story. I know my family will enjoy piecing together the mystery of Camp Green Lake while exploring themes of justice, friendship, and personal growth. It’s going to be a fun and thought-provoking way to end the summer.
October:
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’EngleOctober will bring an adventure through time and space with A Wrinkle in Time. I’m looking forward to exploring the Murry family’s journey to rescue their father while battling darkness with the power of love and faith. It’ll be a thrilling mix of sci-fi and meaningful themes that my family will love discussing.
November:
The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker BradleyIn November, we’ll read The War That Saved My Life, a story I know will touch our hearts. This tale of resilience and healing during World War II will give us the chance to talk about courage, family, and the ways people can overcome incredible challenges. I’m expecting it to be a powerful and inspiring read for our family.
To wrap up the year, we’ll dive into The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street, a story full of holiday warmth and humor. I can already imagine the joy of following the Vanderbeeker siblings as they work together to save their home and celebrate the season. It’ll be the perfect way to end our year of read-alouds with love, laughter, and a sense of community.
