Chapter Books for Family Reading:

I set a goal for 2025 to read more chapter books with the kids this year. This is something we did a lot when they were younger, but we've definitely fallen out of the practice the last several years. This year I have chose 12 books for us to read as a family, one for each month, and I'm excited to make this a new part of our family routine.


The 2025 Chapter Books for Family Reading:

January:

Chapter Books for Family ReadingThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
We’re kicking off the year with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and I can’t wait to step into the magical world of Narnia with my family. I know the kids will be hooked as we follow the Pevensie siblings’ journey to defeat the White Witch and restore Narnia to its former glory. This classic promises to spark conversations about bravery, sacrifice, and the power of love, and I’m excited to experience it together.


February:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
In February, we’ll dive into Wonder, and I’m looking forward to introducing my family to Auggie Pullman and his inspiring story. I know this book will give us the chance to talk about kindness, acceptance, and what it means to be a good friend. It’ll be such a meaningful read as we see the world through Auggie’s eyes and explore how small acts of compassion can make a huge difference.


March:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
Pax by Sara Pennypacker
This March, we’ll read Pax, and I’m ready to be swept away by this heartfelt story of a boy and his fox. I know my kids will connect with Peter and Pax’s bond, and it’ll be so interesting to see their reactions to the challenges they face apart. I expect this book to spark deep conversations about loyalty, growing up, and what it means to do the right thing, even when it’s tough.



April:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
In April, we’ll welcome spring with The Secret Garden, and I can already picture the conversations this story will spark. The transformation of the characters as they nurture a forgotten garden mirrors themes of renewal and healing that I think will resonate with all of us. I’m looking forward to watching my kids’ imaginations grow as they experience this timeless tale of friendship and the beauty of nature.



May:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan

For May, we’ll dive into Echo, and I’m excited to see how my family connects with its unique blend of storytelling and music. The intertwining lives of the characters, bound together by a magical harmonica, will give us plenty to discuss about resilience, hope, and the ways we’re all connected. I know this book will leave a lasting impression and make us think about the power of perseverance.



June:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne Birdsall

When summer begins in June, we’ll read The Penderwicks and join this lively family on their adventures. I can’t wait for the lighthearted fun and the laughter I know this book will bring as we follow four sisters through a summer filled with surprises and friendship. It feels like the perfect way to kick off the season and celebrate family togetherness.


July:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
In July, we’ll immerse ourselves in Hatchet, and I’m eager to see how my kids respond to this gripping survival story. Following Brian’s fight for survival in the wilderness will give us the chance to talk about resilience, resourcefulness, and how to stay calm under pressure. It’ll be an adventurous, edge-of-your-seat kind of read for the summer!


August:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
Holes by Louis Sachar
In August, we’ll dig into Holes and uncover the layers of this quirky, captivating story. I know my family will enjoy piecing together the mystery of Camp Green Lake while exploring themes of justice, friendship, and personal growth. It’s going to be a fun and thought-provoking way to end the summer.


September:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
As we head into fall, we’ll spend September with Anne of Green Gables, and I can’t wait to meet the imaginative, spirited Anne with my kids. Her journey of finding a home and belonging is one I think we’ll all relate to and enjoy. I’m excited for the humor, heartwarming moments, and life lessons this classic will bring to our evenings.


October:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

October will bring an adventure through time and space with A Wrinkle in Time. I’m looking forward to exploring the Murry family’s journey to rescue their father while battling darkness with the power of love and faith. It’ll be a thrilling mix of sci-fi and meaningful themes that my family will love discussing.


November:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

In November, we’ll read The War That Saved My Life, a story I know will touch our hearts. This tale of resilience and healing during World War II will give us the chance to talk about courage, family, and the ways people can overcome incredible challenges. I’m expecting it to be a powerful and inspiring read for our family.


December:

Chapter Books for Family Reading
The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street by Karina Yan Glaser

To wrap up the year, we’ll dive into The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street, a story full of holiday warmth and humor. I can already imagine the joy of following the Vanderbeeker siblings as they work together to save their home and celebrate the season. It’ll be the perfect way to end our year of read-alouds with love, laughter, and a sense of community.
