A Winter Living Room Tour

Our living room has been half put together since we moved into this house. We decorated the fireplace for the fall and Christmas, but that was about it, which means the couch pillows didn't match, there was a big empty space in the corner by the coat closet, and everything was mismatched from living in seven different homes in five years.

I've been really intentional with my purchases since living here. I've wanted to only buy things that I knew I loved, and that I could see myself keeping for several years in a row. I carefully scoured pinterest here and there for a few months, until I finally came across this picture, and then that became my inspiration and starting point for the entire room.

I mostly wanted this to be a space where I could keep the room one way for most of the year, but then switch out simple things like pillows and blankets throughout the year to go with the seasons. Since it's currently winter, I decided to keep everything pretty neutral by using mostly black, brown, white, and grey, and then adding plants for a bright pop of green to add some color and life to the space.

I'd been wanting a couple winter themed pillows to make the space feel cozy, and had a fun time making a couple things on Shutterfly that wound up fitting the space perfectly. I love that Shutterfly has the option to upload images to their site, and then you can have those images printed on things like pillows and blankets so that you can have your own one-of-a-kind pieces.

I had an idea for what I wanted when it came to pillows and blankets, so I went to Etsy and purchased a couple pictures from graphic designers, and then uploaded them to Shutterfly's site to make the exact pillows and blankets that I was looking for. I've been really into modern prints and textiles lately, so I knew I wanted a blanket with a triangle print on it, and then the pine cone seemed so clean and fresh, but still the perfect touch for winter decor. We also have zero things in our home with our "Flamm" initial on them, so when I saw this Woodgrain Monogram pillow, I thought it fit great with everything else and called it good!

I also wanted to make sure to add some functional elements to the space since this is our living room after all. One really simple thing I did that has changed my life was buying a small little basket to put on our hearth, and then I tossed in all of Em's diapers and wipes. These items used to just sit on top of our hearth and it always looked messy, even when I tried to pile them neatly. The basket not only fits with the rest of the room, but keeps everything tidy and in one spot. Such and easy little thing that made a huge difference,

Another thing we did was add two larger baskets on the bottom shelf of our console table. We used to have all our blankets piled up on the floor next to the fireplace, and now we store them all in these baskets. It means that we're able to use them when we want to watch a movie, or build a fort, but when we want everything cleaned up, they're out of the way. The kids also got tablets for Christmas, so we've been using the baskets to store them, and their cables while they're not using them.

There are still a few things we want to change in this space, like painting the walls to match the new paint in the playroom, and eventually changing out of TV stand to something that matches our console table, and actually putting a picture on the wall above the console table, but for now, this is our space, and I'm really content with how it's coming together.
